Comet Hale-Bopp

I took some pictures of the largest comet. Followings are well-taken pictures of them.

DATA Date: Mar. 20 1997, 18:36 - 19:27 (JST)
Place: The beach near Arakawa river (Kamihayashi, Niigata Pref.)
        Camera: Canon FTb
        Lens: 55mm F=1.8
        Film: ISO 800 (Color)
Note: The original film and print are with color. But when
digitized them, grayscale images are the prittiest.
So following images are all converted to 256 grayscale.

18:38 / exposured 30 sec.

About an hour after sunset, the comet had become visible in the evening glow. The weather was almost clear, but some haze on the sea line. You can see the lighthouse of Awashima island at the right-down corner of this picture.

19:15 / exposured 30 sec.

At this time, the evening glow was almost dismissed. The comet was seen in the northwest, with low elevation. In this picture, you can see two type of tails - dust tail and ion tail. Dust tail was a very glimmer of a slanted line running toward right-upper corner. Ion tail was a clear, light, and large sector flowing out of the core of the comet.
